ABSTRACT:
A method of contouring a recording and/or playback surface of a magnetic head transducer to form a precisely contoured surface having a one inch radius of curvature along its major axis is described. The head is secured to a flat surface of a cone-shaped holder and the holder and head are placed within a hemispherical transfer block having a concave surface with a one inch radius of curvature so that the recording surface is in abutting relationship with the concave surface. The holder and head are then placed in a rotatable hemispherical grinding apparatus having a concave grinding surface with a one inch radius of curvature so that the recording surface of the head is disposed in abutting relationship with the concave surface of the grinding tool and is ground to the desired one inch radius of curvature. To further refine the contour of the recording surface, the holder and head are then transferred to a hemispherical polishing apparatus with a concave polishing surface having a one inch radius of curvature and the head is polished to remove irregularities on the recording surface. This method of shaping the recording surface of a head transducer yields uniformly contoured surfaces for large quantities of magnetic head transducers and provides high performance heads which are suitable for high density digital and video recording systems wherein close tolerances are desired.
