ABSTRACT:
A method for polymerizing sulfonated lignin containing materials by adjusting the pH of the materials to a pH below 7, adjusting the moisture content of the materials to a value sufficient to allow the conversion to proceed, but less than 15 percent, and then subjecting the thus treated materials to heating at a temperature from 80.degree. to 225.degree. C in a manner to maintain the moisture content of the material at a value sufficient to allow the conversion to proceed, but less than 15 percent, and for a time period sufficient to form products having a viscosity of at least 25 percent higher than the viscosity of the starting material. The products obtained are useful as dispersants and extenders.
