ABSTRACT:
A packaging machine for bonding a sheet to opposite walls and over the articles in a paperboard tray. One embodiment has a conveyor to move the trays along a predetermined path that includes, in sequence, a film sheet supply station, a compression and heat bonding station, and a heating tunnel or shrinkage station. As the trays move in the predetermined path, a film sheet is drawn over the tops of the articles in each of the successive trays, and flight bars associated with the compression and heating station interpose the sheet between the trailing and leading walls of each of the successive trays and press the sheet against the adjacent trailing and leading walls. Heating means associated with the said flight bars heat the sheet, while compressed, to form a bond between the sheet and the trailing and leading walls. Two independently movable sets of flight bars are provided for placing each of the trays in compression in the compression and heating station whereby the apparatus is adjustable as required to accommodate trays of different size over a range within the limits of the machine. Cutting means at the compression and heating station separate the sheet between adjacent trays following which the trays proceed to a heating tunnel for shrinking the film sheet about the articles to form a tight package. Another embodiment is provided with roller means at the exit of the heating tunnel to form a bond between film sheet and the sidewalls of each of the trays and to improve the appearance of the package. In another embodiment, the overhanging sides of the film sheet are hot-rolled against the sidewalls of the trays before they enter the shrink tunnel, with the trailing film sheet being first tucked neatly against the sidewalls. In a further embodiment, stretch film is employed as a cover film for the trays, whereby the heating tunnel may be dispensed with. In still another embodiment, a vertically reciprocated flight bar clamping mechanism is provided for tightly drawing the film sheet over the article-filled trays, for pressing the sheet against the leading and trailing tray walls, and for heating the sheet, while compressed, to form a bond between the sheet and the trailing and leading tray walls. This embodiment also cuts the film between succeeding tray packs.
