A method for determining potential for body odor and a method for determining the effectiveness of a deodorant carried out by detecting a substance represented by the following formula (1) or a derivative thereof:wherein R1is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R2is an alkyl group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and R3is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group.
