ABSTRACT:
In a method for removing sulfur oxides in a stack gas by absorbing the sulfur oxides in an absorbent comprising predominantly calcium compounds, thereby converting the sulfur oxides to sulfites, and then oxidizing the sulfites to gypsum, the improvement where the absorbent further contains a magnesium compound such as Mg(OH).sub.2, MgCO.sub.3 or MgSO.sub.4.
