ABSTRACT:
Alumina particles derived from hydrous alumina predominating in .alpha.-alumina monohydrate having a crystallite size of less than 100A and having increased porosity can be prepared by a process which comprises forming a mixture of an aqueous slurry of the hydrous alumina and at least one surface active agent, drying this mixture, forming macrosize particles from the dried mixture and calcining the macrosized particles.
