The present invention relates to a novel method for providing a cathartic effect to a patient in need of cathartic induction, which comprises administering to the patient a cathartic-inducing effective amount of halogenated bioactive lipid comprising the following partial structure (I):The method is useful for relieving or preventing constipation, and also for cleansing the gastrointestinal tract.
