The present invention relates to a method for producing marine ostracod crustacean luciferin or a derivative thereof represented by a general formula (4), characterized by reacting a compound represented by a general formula (2) with a compound represented by a general formula (3):wherein R1, R2, R3, R5, Y1and Z1are the same as defined in the specification.
