ABSTRACT:
Naturally-occurring hydrated kaolin clay is calcined under a reducing atmosphere at a temperature of at least 1400.degree.F., preferably in the range of about 1600.degree.F. to 2100.degree.F., and then the clay is calcined in an oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature of at least 1400.degree.F., preferably in the range of about 1600.degree.F. to 2100.degree.F., to produce a calcined clay pigment product of desired brightness.
