A method is provided for the production of optically active (S)-(-)- and (R)-(+)-binaphthol and catalyzed asymmetric hydrolysis of corresponding racemic (R,S)-(.+-.)-binaphthol an (R,S)(.+-.)-spirobiindanol diesters.
