ABSTRACT:
Indoleninium halides, e.g., indoleninium iodides, are prepared by reacting the corresponding indolenine with an organic halide reactant, e.g., alkyl halide, such as methyl iodide, the organo portion of which undergoes addition to the nitrogen atom of the indolenine at conventional reaction temperatures in the presence of a high boiling (80.degree. C.-200.degree. C.) organic ketone solvent selected from the group consisting of acyclic ketones containing from 4 to 12 carbon atoms and alicyclic ketones containing from 4 to 10 carbon atoms.
