ABSTRACT:
A display device employing an oxide based anodic electrochromic material. By reactive ion plating iridium, rhodium or nickel in an atmosphere including oxygen and water vapor, an anodic electrochromic film exhibiting a good contrast ratio can be obtained. This film can independently be an element of the device. However, a high-performance device is provided by combining the film with a cathodic electrochromic material film. In a complementary device combining the anodic oxide film with the cathodic tungsten oxide film, a contrast ratio of 3.17 and a cyclic life of 10.sup.7 or more have been obtained.
