A method for inhibiting the thermal or ultraviolet degradation of a thermoplastic resin containing halogen and/or acidic components excepting olefinic resins, which comprises mixing said thermoplastic resin with about 0.01 to about 5 parts by weight, per 100 parts by weight of said resin, of a hydrotalcite of the following formula
