Novel quaternary alkoxyalkylammonium compounds of the formula 1 ##STR1## in which R denotes C.sub.8 -C.sub.20 --, preferably C.sub.12 -C.sub.18 --, alkyl or C.sub.8 -C.sub.20 --, preferably C.sub.12 -C.sub.18 --, alkenyl, R.sub.1, R'.sub.1 and R".sub.1, which can be identical or different, denote methyl, ethyl or benzyl and at least one of the radicals R.sub.1, R'.sub.1 and R".sub.1 denotes a group of the formula --(C.sub.S H.sub.2S O).sub.x H,
