ABSTRACT:
A method of conditioning a phonograph record comprises applying a very thin film thereto of a quaternary ammonium salt having at least one long hydrocarbon chain. Preferred compositions have the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a hydrocarbon radical having from 8 to 22 carbon atoms, R.sub.2 is a hydrocarbon radical having 8 to 22 carbons, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, quaternary ammonium alkylene, or benzyl, and R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or -(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.n H, wherein n is an integer from 1 to 20, and X is a water-soluble salt-forming anion. Especially preferred compounds are quaternary ammonium compounds having at least one tallow radical. The compound is applied by spraying small quantities of a solution containing a minor amount of the salt dissolved in a solvent on a soft applicator, and pressing the applicator against the record while the surface is moving relative to the applicator.
