ABSTRACT:
A method for locating an optimum alignment of an optical fiber to an active device uses response surface approximations. In an X-Y coordinate plane perpendicular to the optical fiber, measurements at a first series of alignments are made from which the path of steepest ascent of light transfer between the optical fiber and the active device is approximated by first order design model. Further measurements are made within a more limited region determined by the first order design model approximation. From the further measurements second order modelling is done to approximate the alignment resulting in maximum light transfer between the optical fiber and the active device.
