ABSTRACT:
In a distributed computer network where a gateway device is provided having multiple switched communications ports, a mechanism for allocating access to the switched ports between outgoing and incoming calls is provided. A remote procedure call facility in the distributed system is modified with an interface mechanism having a pool of virtual handles or software images of physical ports. On receiving a remote procedure call for a switched communications, one of the virtual handles is returned. It is only when a physical switched communications link is actually necessary, as indicated by the return of the virtual handle to the gateway device, that a port is located and the remote procedure call bound to it for attempting a call. If no port is available at that time, an error code is returned. Otherwise, a return code is generated that is consistent with the result of the call attempt. As the number of virtual handles can far exceed the actual number of ports, many clients to the gateway device can be satisfied concurrently, despite the occupation of all of the ports.
