.alpha..sub.1 -antitrypsin and peptide fragments and derivatives thereof are used to upregulate low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol receptor levels in the liver, and this results in a decrease in circulating LDL cholesterol levels in the patient's circulatory system.
