ABSTRACT:
A method and apparatus for performing division and remainder operations is described which first comprises two data inputs, each for inputting one of a dividend and a divisor. Cache memory look-up table circuitry is used for determining whether a first value is present in a cache memory, the first value representing the value of the divisor. Cache memory retrieval circuitry is used for reading a second value from the cache memory as a reciprocal of the divisor, the second value corresponding to the first value and representing the reciprocal of the first value, in the event that the first value is determined to be present in the cache memory. A multiplier is then used to multiply the reciprocal and the dividend to get the result. Alternatively, in remainder operations, the second value may be a previously determined quotient stored in the cache memory.
