ABSTRACT:
A method and apparatus is provided for use in underbalanced drilling of a well bore. A stream of substantially inert gases is provided by cooling, treating and compressing a stream of exhaust gases. The exhaust gases are cooled to a temperature less than 100.degree. F. in a quench tower and a heat exchanger. The cooled gases are treated to reduce their acid content and then compressed to a pressure suitable for underbalanced drilling. The compressed exhaust gases can then be used as the drilling fluids. They may or may not be mixed with atmospheric air or drilling mud.
