ABSTRACT:
A method and apparatus is presented for monitoring the cyclic variability of combustion or one or more cylinders of a reciprocating internal combustion engine. Exhaust temperature signals are acquired from one or more exhaust temperature sensors. Cycle-by-cycle values which are related to combustion characteristics are obtained from each exhaust temperature signal. Statistical parameters related to the dispersion of sets of the cycle-by-cycle values are then obtained. The statistical parameters are used to provide an indication of the cyclic variability of the engine.
