ABSTRACT:
To measure the electrical conductivity of a liquid, or the concentration of a solution, an insulated combination of two transformers each of which has an annular core is immersed in the liquid such that the two transformers are electromagnetically coupled by a coil of the liquid which passes through the center holes of the two transformers. By applying AC voltage to the primary winding of the first transformer a current that is proportional to the conductivity of the liquid flows in the liquid coil, and this current is represented by the output of the second transformer. On the second transformer a compensation winding is wound so as to negate magnetic flux produced by the flow of the current in the liquid coil. To adjust a current which is made to flow in the compensation winding so as to render the output of the second transformer null, a photoconductive device such as CdS cell is used in combination with a light-emitting device, and the voltage to drive the light-emitting device is controlled based on the phase and magnitude of the output of the second transformer. The invention includes an improved manner of holding the two transformers in a chamber in a synthetic resin body and preventing corrosion in the case of measuring the conductivity of a corrosive liquid such as hydrofluoric acid solution.
