ABSTRACT:
The thickness of bones of the skull is determined in vivo employing ultrasonic waves which are transmitted into the bone; reflected echoes of the transmitted waves are converted into electrical signals and the signals are windowed to identify a zone embracing the bone thickness; a power spectrum is developed of each electrical signal of the windowed zone; the power spectrum is differentiated to provide a plot of frequency and amplitude and the distance between adjacent peaks of the wave plot is measured from which the bone thickness can be computed.
