A method and apparatus for detecting the location of an event from amongst a plurality (A to P) of locations. Lines of communication (R1to R4, C1to C4), commonly pipes of a smoke detection system, cover the locations in such a fashion that the location of an event can be determined uniquely but the number of pipes is minimized.
