ABSTRACT:
A method for detecting the ignition timing for an engine comprising the steps of detecting the production in a crank angle range outside of the range where ignition can occur of a crank angle signal by a crank angle sensor at a first time point, detecting an ignition signal corresponding to the burning flame within the combustion chamber of the engine at the second time point, calculating the time difference T.sub.o between the first and second time points, and seeking a crank angle displacement from the production of the crank angle signal to the ignition signal detected by the equation of T.sub.o /CSC.times.360, where CSC indicates a time interval between the crank angle signals and its apparatus. According to the present invention, even when the peak of the combustion light or the burning flame is detected twice for one combustion stroke, an accurate ignition timing can be detected by the detection of the first peak of the combustion light.
