ABSTRACT:
Removal of NO.sub.x and SO.sub.x from waste gases is carried out by irradiation of the gas with ionizing radiation at a dose such as to reduce the content of NO.sub.x and SO.sub.x to a first predetermined level and passing such gas through subsequent irradiating stages with the dose of irradiation of the gas in the last stage being determined by the levels of NO.sub.x and SO.sub.x entering said last stage whereby to reduce such contaminants to desired levels and thereafter passing the gas through an aerosol collector.
