A hybrid electric vehicle drive system or transaxle10including an internal combustion engine12, a generator/motor14which is coupled to engine12by use of a planetary gear set20, and an electric motor16. Drive system10includes a brake or clutch assembly34which is operatively and selectively coupled to a generator/motor14and is effective to supplement the generator-produced reaction torque, thereby cooperating with the generator/motor14to control the speed of engine12.
