ABSTRACT:
A method and apparatus are provided for acoustically measuring precipitat rates and total amounts of rainfall. The rainfall is collected in a reservoir and drained through a gravity feed tube system. The gravity feed tube system receives a steady flow of rainfall draining from the reservoir and converts the steady flow into drops by means of surface tension within the tube system. The formed drops exit the tube system and impact a surface that is acoustically responsive to the impact. The acoustically responsive surface is monitored to count the number of drops impacting same, wherein the number of drops counted is indicative of the precipitation rate and total amount of rainfall.
