ABSTRACT:
An improved method and apparatus four operating a high-speed four cycle compression ignition engine cause the amount of NO.sub.x in the exhaust gases to be reduced substantially. The improved method of operating the high-speed for cycle compression ignition engine is of the type wherein fresh working fluid is introduced through an intake valve, the working fluid is compressed, fuel is injected and burns thereby expanding the working fluid, and the working fluid is scavenged through an exhaust valve, the improvement comprising timing the opening of the intake valve and the closing of the exhaust valve so that no fresh working fluid is permitted to pass out the exhaust valve.
The timing of the opening of the intake valve and the closing of the exhaust valve is achieved by adjusting the contours and the relative positions of the valve cams on the cam shaft of the engine.
