ABSTRACT:
Methanol can be selectively converted to acetaldehyde, ethanol or mixtures thereof, using a homogeneous process. The process comprises contacting methanol with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalytic system containing cobalt-ruthenium complexes or a soluble ruthenium compound plus Co.sub.2 (CO).sub.8-n where n is from 0 to 4.
