ABSTRACT:
In a computer aided method of detecting problems in the drilling of a well, the hook load is measured while free rotating, while moving the string out of the well for an incremental distance, and while moving the drill string into the hole the same incremental distance. These hook loads are used in determining the effective friction factor of the drill string as a function of depth. The hook loads and free rotating torque are plotted as a function of time in order to produce an indication of hole problems.
