A propulsion system2for a waterborne vessel4having a hull structure6,typically for a full or semi planing boat. The propulsion system2has a pod housing8having a front end10and a rear end12, a propeller14and a propeller shaft16. The propeller14is disposed externally at the front end10of the pod8and is rotatable about a longitudinal axis18of the propeller shaft16, the propeller shaft16being drivingly connected to a drive assembly. The drive assembly has a transmission unit20and a power unit22in the form of a diesel engine. In FIG.1the diesel engine is shown disconnected from the transmission unit20. The power unit22is disposed within the structure of the hull6and, in this particular embodiment; the transmission unit20is disposed substantially outside the structure of the hull6. The hull6is formed with a port24through which an interface unit26extends. The interface unit26provides structures for transmitting the torque of the power unit22to the transmission unit20.
