An MEA having an MEA body part5C; a frame6made of a plate-like thermoplastic resin; and gaskets7formed on opposed surfaces of the frame6so as to hold the frame6between. The gaskets7each have an annular portion7A that is annularly formed so as to extend along the inner periphery of the frame6and elongated portions7B1to7B8that extend from the annular portion7A and come into contact with the side faces of an associated electrode layer5C after passing over the inner periphery of the frame6and a peripheral region5D of a polymer electrolyte membrane.
