A process for the manufacture of thiophen-3-aldehyde, in which a 2,5-dialkoxy-3-formyl-tetrahydrofuran is reacted with hydrogen sulfide in the presence of a strong acid, at temperatures of from 50.degree. to 320.degree. C.
