ABSTRACT:
A linear actuator, which may be used as a rock trimmer, comprises a support member extending upwardly from a work surface, and a first cleaving member coupled to the support member so as to be disposed above the rock sample opposite the work surface, the first cleaving member having a working axis. The linear actuator also comprises a positioning mechanism and a hydraulic mechanism, each being operatively associated with the first cleaving member. The positioning mechanism provides for imparting rectilinear travel to the first cleaving member so as to selectively adjust the position of the member relative to the work surface, along the working axis. The hydraulic mechanism produces a working force that is transmitted to the first cleaving member for application to the rock sample. The force is applied to the sample, directed downwardly toward the work surface substantially along said working axis. The positioning mechanism and hydraulic mechanism are constructed so as to have a common actuator.
