ABSTRACT:
A manual crimping apparatus for attaching a ferrule to the end of a hose includes a pair of facing die carriers each having a pair of spaced carrier plates and a respective pair of roller dies coupled thereto and positioned therebetween. All of the carrier plates are identical in size and configuration. Moving the two die carriers toward one another positions the four roller dies about and in tight engagement with the outer periphery of a ferrule. With the rotational axes of each of the roller dies not aligned with the ferrule's longitudinal axis, rotational displacement of the crimper about the ferrule causes the roller dies to travel about the ferrule in a spiral path permitting virtually any length of the ferrule to be crimped in intimate contact with the hose. A spiral groove in the outer periphery of each of the roller dies further promotes displacement of the crimper along the length of the ferrule. A connecting link and a manually operated draw bolt connect respective adjacent ends of the carrier plates of the two carrier dies to form a closed frame containing the four roller dies and including a pivoting joint at each of its four corners. The pivoting joints coupling its four frame member essentially eliminate friction within the crimper allowing the roller dies to tightly and uniformly engage the ferrule's outer periphery in forming a strong, smooth, highly uniform circular crimp. Another embodiment contemplates attachment of the roller dies to a locking pliers.
