ABSTRACT:
A magneto-optic recording medium is formed from a plurality of perpendicularly magnetized thin film layers, each of which is capable of recording and reproducing information. The layers are mounted on a transparent substrate which is exposed to an incident laser. Layers farther from the incident substrate have a higher Curie temperature than closer layers. Recording on multiple layers is possible because information from a desired layer is successively transferred to layers closer to the incident beam for reading the information as recording is done on layers closer to the substrate. Information in a closer layer is stored in secondary data storage when farther layers are read and then rerecorded.
