ABSTRACT:
A tape recording and/or playback apparatus for use with a magnetic tape cassette including a magnetic head, a head moving mechanism, a switching mechanism, and a tension adjust mechanism. The switching mechanism switches over the tape running direction between a forward direction and a reverse direction and also changes the tape running speed to a speed higher than the normal recording and/or playback speed. The tape is driven by an endless belt cooperating with take-up and supply reel flywheels. When the high-speed tape drive operation is selected by the switching mechanism, the head is withdrawn from contact with the tape and the belt tension is reduced during the high-speed tape drive operation.
