The subject invention pertains to macrocyclic compounds, and their use, the compounds having the formula (I)wherein X is a ring bearing an optionally-protected functional group or solid phase group R1, Y is a linker optionally bearing an optionally-protected functional group or solid phase group R2, m is at least 3, and each instance of X, Y, R1and R2may be the same or different.
