ABSTRACT:
Condensation polymers of high molecular weight, such as polyesters, polyureas, and polyamides, are usually prepared at temperatures of 200.degree. C. or greater. However, by utilizing the catalyst systems of the present invention, condensation polymers can be synthesized at much lower temperatures. The polycondensation catalyst systems of the present invention are particularly useful for synthesizing aliphatic polyesters, such as polyethylene terephthalate, from dicarboxylic acids and aliphatic glycols. The present invention more specifically discloses a process for the synthesis of an aliphatic polyester comprising polymerizing at least one dicarboxylic acid with at least one aliphatic glycol in the presence of (1) at least one phosphorus containing compound which contains at least one trivalent or pentavalent phosphorus atom which is bonded directly to at least one phenyl group, (2) an acid acceptor, and (3) at least one halogenated organic compound. It is preferred to utilize a polymeric agent having bound acid acceptor groups as the acid acceptor in the process of the present invention.
