ABSTRACT:
A process for treating mixtures of isopropylnaphthalenes (IPN) obtained from any source and increasing the beta-isopropylnaphthalene content thereof by a batch or continuous isomerization reaction in the presence of a rare earth metal ammonium-exchanged, "Y Type" crystalline aluminosilicate catalyst. The process also includes disproportionation of higher alkylates of naphthalene, such as diisopropylnaphthalene, to increase the IPN content of said mixtures.
