A catalyst, and method of preparing and using a catalyst, for the hydrodesulfurization of metal-containing heavy feedstocks, which has improved catalytic life and metals capacity. The catalyst contains Group VIB and Group VIII metals or metal compounds on a support comprising alumina wherein the support has 70 volume percent of its pore volume in pores having a diameter of between 140 and 220 .ANG..
