ABSTRACT:
Low attenuation, high strength optical fiber is made by drawing a silica filament core at a temperature from 2040.degree. C. to 2140.degree. C. and melt coating onto it cladding polymer having an index of refraction lower than that of the silica core by extrusion at a draw-down ratio from 1.2 to 2.0.
