A lithium ion secondary battery comprising: a positive electrode; a negative electrode; and a non-aqueous electrolyte, the positive electrode comprising a positive electrode active material and a binder, the positive electrode active material comprising a lithium-containing composite oxide represented by the chemical formula:in-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="lead"?Lia(Co1-x-yMgxMy)bOcin-line-formulae description="In-line Formulae" end="tail"?where M is at least one selected from Ni, Mn and Al, 0≦a≦1.05, 0.005≦x≦0.025, 0≦y≦0.25, 0.85≦b≦1.1, and 1.8≦c≦2.1.
