ABSTRACT:
A liquid crystal shutter has a liquid crystal layer which is made of a liquid crystal material prepared from a nematic liquid crystal. The ratio d/p of the thickness d of the liquid crystal layer to the chiral pitch p of the liquid crystal material and a twist angle .theta. which is set by a pair of alignment layers for liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer satisfy the relation of .theta./360.degree.<d/p.
