In a liquid crystal display including a liquid crystal display panel formed by sandwiching a liquid crystal layer between an active matrix substrate2and a counter substrate, and a backlight system10that illuminates the liquid crystal display panel from the active matrix substrate side, an optical sensor5for detecting the intensity of ambient light is provided in a peripheral region of a display region6in a substrate surface of the active matrix substrate2on the liquid crystal layer side. The optical sensor5is located near the outer edge6dof the display region6that is perpendicular to the direction (X direction) in which the directivity of emitted light of the backlight system10is highest.
