ABSTRACT:
A nematic liquid crystal composition is provided having not only a high clearing point and a low viscosity and capable of exhibiting a desired .DELTA.n value, but also having an improved steepness in the voltage-transmittance characteristic in the SBE mode display. A liquid crystal display element is also provided. The composition is obtained by mixing a first component comprising a compound of the following formula (I) with a second component comprising a compound of the following formula (II), or by additionally mixing the first and second components with a third component comprising a group of compounds of the following formulas (III) and (IV), or further additionally mixing the first, second and third components with a fourth component comprising a compound of the following formula (V): ##STR1##
