ABSTRACT:
A liquid crystal composition having a positive dielectric anisotropy contains 20 wt % to 70 wt % of a first liquid crystal material consisting of at least one liquid crystal compound represented by a formula ##STR1## (wherein R.sub.1 represents a linear alkyl group having 2 to 9 carbon atoms and R.sub.2 represents a linear alkyl group or alkoxy group having 2 to 9 carbon atoms), and 30 wt % to 80 wt % of a third liquid crystal material consisting of at least one liquid crystal compound in which a value of a dielectric anisotropy .DELTA..epsilon. is negative or substantially "0". The liquid crystal composition optionally contains 10 wt % or less of a second liquid crystal material consisting of at least one liquid crystal compound having a positive dielectric anisotopy .DELTA..epsilon.. A liquid crystal display device is arranged such that the liquid crystal composition is interposed between a pair of substrates on which electrodes are formed.
