ABSTRACT:
A limited free-motion coupling device10coupling an impeller14to a shaft16of a rotor12, the coupling device10comprising first and second parts20, 22which are axially engaged for relative angular displacement about a rotational axis A, and two spherical coupling members24for engaging the first and second parts20, 22to prevent the relative angular displacement. One of the first and second parts20, 22is provided on the shaft16of the rotor12, and the other is provided on the impeller14. The first part20comprises two spaced coupling member arms30which project radially. The second part22comprises a cylindrical wall66extending coaxially with the rotational axis A of the coupling device10. Two spaced arcuate channels50are formed in the cylindrical wall66. Each coupling member24is received in and projects radially from a respective arcuate channel50, and is freely movable between end walls of the arcuate channel50. As the first part20, rotates relative to the second part22, the coupling member arms30of the first part20engage and move the coupling members24along the respective arcuate channels50until the coupling members24abut the end walls of the arcuate channels50, thus locking the first part20relative to the second part22.
