ABSTRACT:
A new leuco dye is capable of developing into a colored dye which has an absorption band in the near infrared region. The new leuco dye has the following formula (I): ##STR1## wherein each of R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 independently is hydrogen, an alkyl group, an aralkyl group, a cycloalkyl group or an aryl group; each of X.sup.1 and X.sup.2 independently is oxygen, sulfur or --NR.sup.4 -- (R.sup.4 has the same meaning as for R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3); each of the rings A to E independently is benzene ring or naphthalene ring and may have one or more substituent groups; and each of R.sup.1 to R.sup.4 may have one or more substituent groups. A recording material containing the leuco dye is also disclosed.
